North end of the Republican Palace Complex, just West of the Al-Jumhuriya Bridge, possibly the Planning Ministry buildings. A great battle took place here over several days as the U.S. Marines entered Baghdad.

According to Iraqis lurking about the area, the destroyed classic Mercedes Benz's in the center of the image belonged to Uday Hussein and appeared that they were used as a barricade, their were several more destroyed classic cars scattered amongst the rubble. Also to the right just out of frame was a destroyed Special Forces vehicle.

If you walk straight down this alley toward the destroyed vehicles about 100 yards you will come to Yafa Street, make a right and you be heading East, the Al-Jumhuriya bride which crosses the Tigris river is about 100 yard down the street, cross the bridge and you will be in Downtown Baghdad.
